Rules were meant to be broken, just not all the time!
We surround ourselves with rules and expected behaviors – but if we step back and look, will our children remember the time we walked around the mud puddle or the time we jumped in it with them? Here are some fun ways you can ensure that life doesn’t get in the way of your laughter!
Be a kid. This is an easy one! Step down to their level and enjoy. Surprise everyone with silly string, have a Nerf fight, build a cardboard box fort or take Barbie out of her house and on an adventure. The possibilities are endless! If you are stuck, just ask your kids.
Put normal on the back burner! For just one meal, set normalcy aside. If you usually eat around the table, throw a blanket down on the living room floor and have a picnic… TV is optional! Splurge and have ice cream for dinner. Have a design-your-own pizza night and see who can make the silliest pizza. Make everyone’s favorite dish at one meal, even if it means eating spaghetti and sushi!
Laugh out loud. You know all those times you muffle your laughter in fear that your kids will hear you and think you condone their silly behavior? Don’t hide it. Laugh at the stupid jokes and weird body sounds! Watch a funny movie together and do not hold back the belly laughs. Drag out the old photo albums and laugh at everyone’s outfits. Watching you laugh is one of the greatest memories a child can hold!
Be silly. Make a face out of your tortilla at dinner. Surprise them with an untimely joke. Put a whoopee cushion under the couch cushion. Just have fun!
Loosening up is sometimes hard, but it is much like riding a bike… you never forget how! Your children will remember these times and the laughter will carry on.
